Christmas gifts for sewing enthusiasts

Do you prefer sewist or sewer? Or maybe just fabric crafter? I usually choose quilter, but that no longer really defines what I do since I like to make clothes and bags too, I guess I’m a sewer.

Regardless of the title you choose, here are some gift ideas for the sort of thing you may want to put on your list for Santa (or spouse, offspring, parents…) this year that maybe you wouldn’t have considered!

A sewing machine perfect for retreats – currently £79.00
Until December 1st there’s £10 off colourful sewing machines at John Lewis. They’re ideal for a back up to your main machine whilst it is being serviced or taking to sewing clubs and retreats such as the Sew Brit Bag Camp (see later in the post) as they’re small enough to be portable and still have all the stitches you need, plus they come in fun colours, like this mint green one.

Membership to the Bag of the Month club – $35
Here’s a gift you definitely won’t already have- a new release bag pattern each month for six months! Early bird subscriptions start 1st December and cost $35, rising to $40 from January 1st. The bags above show the patterns from 2015. For more information join this Facebook group to find out when subscriptions go on sale.

Hannah Bass Tapestry Kit – £64.95
I spotted these at Festival of Quilts this year- they are so striking! Enjoy a bit of slow stitching time with a tapestry kit by Hannah, many cities available and she is taking requests for future designs too. From Not On The High Street.

Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Colour Chart – £20
Quilters who use Kona solids will find this invaluable, even if it seems like a dull present at face value, I wondered how I lived without it! Use the colour card to find the perfect shade to co-ordinate with a pretty stack of patterned fabrics, or to identify a pesky colour that you need to order more of. Available lots of places, including M Is For Make.

Sew Brit Bag Camp Residential Ticket – £295
If three days away from home, meeting new friends and sewing bags in the countryside seems like the perfect break for you, then check out the Sew Brit retreat. Tickets are on sale now and there’s also a cheaper day ticket if your budget doesn’t stretch to the whole retreat. Read more about it here.

If you have sewn anything from the patterns available on we would love you to share your pictures! Maybe you have made a Mrs H bag, or an Emmaline Necessary Clutch Wallet?

If we use your picture in our email newsletter you will receive a pattern of your choice for free!

Email your pictures to and make sure you subscribe to the newsletter here!
